What are Alters/Headmates?Alters are distinct self-states or “parts” within a plural system. They form as a survival response, usually from prolonged or early trauma, and each has their own roles, perspectives, and ways of interacting with the world. Alters are most often spoken about in the context of DID/OSDD systems.What about Plurality?Not every plural uses the word alter. Some prefer headmate, part, or other terms. While alters specifically describe trauma-formed selves, the wider plural community includes people who identify as plural for different reasons (for example, spiritual, neurodivergent, or self-created origins). These are not considered “systems” in the medical sense, but they are still valid plurals.Quick Note on Language
